Health Suite

Walk-in hours: Wednesdays2 to 3 p.m. 
By appointment: Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

The Health Suite at the Community Engagement Center provides nursing supports, health education, and care management to community members, free of charge.  Services include health assessments and screenings, referrals to providers, care navigation, education and coaching, and connections to local resources to support health and social needs.

Grocery Giveaway

3rd Wednesdays, 10 to 11 a.m. 
Choose from a bag of seasonal produce or a simple meal kit that serves four, from our local grocery partner, complete with instructions for a healthy meal. Community Dinner

Thursday, May 28, 5-6:30 p.m.

Enjoy a delicious meal from a local vendor, catch up with neighbors, and learn about opportunities offered to the community by UMB, UM BioPark, and local community organizations. Community dinner occurs quarterly.

Dubin Makerspace

The Steve and Mim Dubin Makerspace provides access to maker education, tools, and resources for the community, creating opportunities for learning and connection. Equipment includes 3D printers, vinyl cutters, sewing machines, Glowforge laser printer, and more.

Classes are for adults. Youth programming available through partnerships across UMB and with community organizations. For more information on maker programming, email Dionne McConkey or call 410-706-5620.

    Explore new artists and get creative making a variety of art projects each week.

    Work independently on your own projects with an Open Works instructor available for support. No formal instruction is provided during this time.  

    Legacy Arts Academy by R.I.S.E. Arts Center of Baltimore
    Wednesdays, 4-6 p.m. | Spring 2026 registration is full. 
    Hands-on instruction for youth in costume/fashion design, playwriting, product innovation, digital arts, and fine arts paired with integrated support and mentorship.

    Learn the basics of sewing and get certified to use the CEC machines for your own personal projects during our Open Build hours. Instruction provided by Open Works. 

    Sit n’ Sew
    First and Third Mondays, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. 
    Love to sew? Bring your latest project and work alongside other sewers while receiving support from our sewing instructor. Sewing machines, some fabric, and other essential tools will be provided. No formal instruction is provided during this time. 

    Make & Take
    Second Thursdays, 2 to 4 p.m.
    Fourth Thursdays, 6 to 8 p.m.
    Learn to safely operate makerspace tools like sewing machines, vinyl cutters, and more while creating a project to take home.

Family Science Night
First Fridays, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Meet wacky scientist, “Rocket Reba” and learn with the family through an interactive presentation. Register for Family Science Night.

Community Chess
Second Fridays, 6 to 8 p.m.
Coaches from The Board Room Chess guide players at all levels of play, whether it’s your first time or you’ve been playing for years.  Register for Community Chess.

Workforce Development

Workforce Wednesdays
Wednesdays, 2 to 5 p.m. Walk-ins welcome; virtual appointments available by appointment.

Looking for help finding a job or job training? Receive one-on-one guidance about job resources in the area, résumé writing, and applications. Consult with our team, including a Southwest Works representative and volunteers from UMB’s Human Resources office.

Computer and Technology Support

Computer Lab
Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Free computer use, plus limited black-and-white printing, copying, faxing, and scanning services are available. Hours may vary based on scheduled programming in the computer lab. If possible, call ahead (410-706-8260) to confirm availability. Youth must be supervised by an adult to use the lab.

    Tuesdays, 3:15 to 5:15 p.m.

    CASH Campaign of Maryland
    Financial wellness services provided in-house at the CEC.

    • Benefits Screenings: Fast and confidential screenings for benefit programs such as energy assistance, healthcare, food, and more.
    • Financial Coaching: Ongoing support by phone or video. Achieve short-term goals such as budgeting, building credit, and paying off debt.   
    • Tax Preparation: during tax season, households with income of $69,000 or less in 2025 can have their taxes done for free.

  • United Way of Central Maryland
    By appointment

    211 Housing and Resource Navigation Specialist is available at the Community Engagement Center (CEC) to help connect neighbors to resources such as housing, food, and other support services. Request to be connected to the CEC-based specialist by calling 211 and selecting the option for Southwest Baltimore or request 211 assistance online.

    The Family Stability Program Poppleton supports families with children in targeted neighborhoods and schools who are experiencing housing instability. Participants receive family coaching and financial assistance in effort to provide families with tools to maintain self-sufficiency and allow their children to remain in their school of origin.
